Teacher Preparation Program |
| Students seeking a credential to teach English in California secondary schools must complete a state-approved Subject Matter Preparation Program in English before starting practice teaching in his or her fifth-year credential program. The English Department offers a Subject Matter Preparation Program that supplements strong English major and core curriculum programs with other pertinent course work and procedures. Our aim is to produce the excellent English teachers that all secondary school students deserve, teachers whose professional vision goes beyond mere competence in the instruction of literature and composition. |
|
| Students in the English teacher preparation program fulfill course requirements in three strands |
|
- Writing: English 180 One of the following: English 128, English 174, English 175, 176, and English 177
- Literature: - One upper- or lower-division ethnic literature course - A Shakespeare course, (ENGL 116, ENGL 117, or ENGL 118) as listed in the New English Major Requirement booklet - Three upper-division American literature courses
- Linguistics and Oral Communication:
- English 104
- Either English 101 or 102
- Communication 20
- For most students, the overall commitment is five courses beyond the fulfillment of the English major. Students typically will fill their area of specialization requirement for their English major either with the three American literature courses, or with English 180 and the two linguistics courses.

| Additional Standards |
|
| In addition to fulfilling these course requirements, candidates for the waiver will meet the following standards indicating the potential to succeed in the fifth-year program and beyond: Students enrolled in the Subject Matter Preparation Program must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.7 in the courses counting directly toward the waiver. In addition, all students in the Program must pass the capstone Senior Seminar with a minimum grade of B. Top |

| Fieldwork and Technological Applications |
|
| At the time of the Senior Summative Interview, students must demonstrate fieldwork experience in English teaching and familiarity with technological applications to English teaching. Students will be guided toward on- and off-campus experiences that will fulfill the spirit of these standards,m such as Teaching in the Community (ENGL 196) or other appropriate Arrupe placements. These requirements and standards indicate the Department's high goals for the teachers we hope to provide for secondary schools in California and elsewhere: well read, well skilled, well educated men and women with a lofty vision of the teacher's vocation and a deep commitment to passing on the best of our field to each of their students. | Competence in Writing and Oral Expression, Breadth and Depth of Reading, and Integration of Studies |
|
| Students will be assessed as prospective teachers more fully than mere grades can indicate. Progress will be traced through reports of teachers in core Program courses, a formal Junior Year Assessment, and a summative Senior Year Assessment. The department director of the pre-credential waiver program for students planning to teach secondary English is Jill Goodman Gould. Top |
